Become a Foster Parent.  Our most pressing need is finding loving foster parents and safe and secure foster homes. For every dog that is fostered another dog can be saved from the shelter. Quite literally, our success depends on the boundless compassion and generosity of our foster parents.

What does a foster parent do?  Give shelter—a safe and secure home, which many of our dogs may never have experienced. Give lots of unconditional love and patience. And prepare the dog for a forever home.  Bonaparte’s Retreat does everything else!  We provide all food, all flea, tick, and heartworm treatment, and all vet and medical care.

We ask our foster parents to care for the dogs as if they are personal pets.  And fostering can be hard. But it’s also one of the most rewarding things you can do as an animal lover.  Any of our foster parents will tell you that the rewards far outweigh the difficulties.  Imagine the gratitude and reassurance you will feel when a once neglected and unloved dog finally finds his forever home and people to call his very own.  If you can, open your home and open your heart by becoming a foster parent.

Bonaparte’s Retreat needs volunteers to:

  • Exercise the dogs (walk, play, throw ball, socialize, take them on a field trip) during mid-morning to early afternoon hours.  Walk a dog on your lunch hour!
  • Be an “event assistant” at our monthly Meet & Greet adoption events at PetSmart in Brentwood or at other special events. Event assistants learn about our dogs and programs and answer questions from visitors.
  • Be a “transporter or handler” for our monthly Meet & Greet adoption events or other special events. Transporters agree to pick up and return a dog for us.  Handlers are the leash holders of the dogs during the meet & greet, walk the dog, and introduce the dog to visitors.
  • Be a shelter helper by cleaning facilities and spreading mulch and pine straw in dog play areas.
  • Assist with social media posting, distribute our adoptable dog flyers, or help with administrative or office tasks. Are you a social media expert?  Let us know how you can help.
  • Assist us at special, larger events with event set up and breakdown, booth attendees, dog handling and transporting, and many other activities.
